Where Is Mozambique?

Mozambique lies along the Indian Ocean sea border of Southern Africa and is bordered by Tanzania to the North, South Africa and Swaziland to the South, Zimbabwe to the West and Zambia and Malawi to the northwest.

The Awaken Mozambique project has been initiated in Beira which is the second largest city in Mozambique. It lies in the central region of the country, where the Pungue River meets the Indian Ocean. Beira has an estimated population of 546,000 (data from 2006).

It holds the significant Port of Beira which acts as a gateway for both the central interior portion of the country as well as the land-locked nations of Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi.

About Beira

Beira suffered greatly during the brutal 16-year conflict that wreaked havoc upon Mozambique. Today, Sofala province, where Biera is located, has the dubious reputation of being Mozambique’s poorest province. As an economy, Beira is struggling, physical infrastructure is broken and its people appear to have few opportunities to progress.
